The Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Russia congratulates all Russian citizens on the occasion of National Unity Day!
On November 4th the Russian Federation annually celebrates National Unity Day. This public holiday was established in 2005 to commemorate the events of 1612, when Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky led the people's volunteer army to liberate Moscow from occupation by foreign occupation forces. The monument to Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, who later became national heroes, is located in Red Square opposite St. Basil's Cathedral.

The holiday is also the feast day of the Russian Orthodox icon of Our Lady of Kazan, which was the main shrine of the Minin and Pozharsky's volunteer army.

Nowadays National Unity Day is celebrated all over the Russian Federation with festive concerts, performances, sporting events, and rallies, organized by various political parties and social movements.
