On August 29 – September 02, 2020 a delegation from the Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation headed by H.E. the Ambassador Prof. M.D. Lamawansa made the first ever official visit to the city of Kursk and Kursk region. Delegation included Deputy Head of Mission Mr. Mohamed Anas, Second Secretary (Commercial) Ms. Chathurika Perera, Second Secretary (Political) Ms. Nirosha Herath, Consular officer Ms. Nayomi Chandrasiri, Personal Assistant to H.E. the Ambassador Ms. Olessya Romanova, Trade and Tourism promotion Assistant Ms. Maria Selikhova and Culture Promotion Assistant Ms. Yulia Builova.

Kursk is one of the prominent regions in the Russian Federation with a rich historical background. The Embassy team started their 4-day visit with a tour to the 3rd Battle Field Museum dedicated to the largest tank battle in the World War II. Ambassador M.D. Lamawansa offered flowers at the bell-tower which was built at the very same place of the battle, to pay tribute to the fallen Soviet heroes.

In the framework of the official visit Ambassador Prof. M.D. Lamawansa had a meeting with the Governor of Kursk region Mr. Roman Starovoit. The Ambassador and the Governor underlined the close sustainable relationship established between the two countries since 1957 and agreed on the need to expand cooperation between Sri Lanka and Kursk region with regard to several areas such as education, agriculture and industrial complex, tourism and tea promotion. The Governor thanked Ambassador Prof. M.D. Lamawansa for his respect to the Russian history and appreciated the visits made to historical places.

The discussion was followed by a press-conference and a meeting with Chairs of the Committees of Kursk Regional Administration for Industry, Trade and Entrepreneurship; Education and Science; Culture and Tourism; Youth Policy and Sports where matters pertaining to cooperation in the spheres of industry, tourism, economy, imports and exports of agro-food and non-grocery products, science and education were raised.
