On May 22, 2020 over 260 Sri Lankan nationals were evacuated by a special SriLankan Airlines flight from the Domodedovo International Airport in Moscow, Russia. 

Due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia arranged the evacuation flight with the support of the Presidential Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Relations of Sri Lanka, and the Government of the Russian Federation.

Most of the repatriated Sri Lankans are students enrolled at universities in a number of Russian cities, such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Tver, Kursk, Volgograd, Samara, Voronezh, and Saratov. 

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation expresses its gratitude to everyone who took part in the evacuation process coordination and provision of assistance to Sri Lankan students during their stay in Russia, especially officials of the Sri Lankan and Russian government authorities, chairman and members of the Sri Lankan Business Council, members of the Sri Lankan local community, representatives of University Student Unions and group leaders.
