Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera met with the Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs (The higher Chamber of the Russian Parliament), Mr. Grigory Karasin, and held a constructive meeting for strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the conversation, both sides conducted a substantive review of the current state and prospects for the development of Sri Lanka-Russia relations across trade, economic, cultural, education, and humanitarian spheres, underscoring the long-standing bilateral ties.
Both parties highlighted the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue as a key instrument for advancing bilateral cooperation, expressing determination to expand collaboration with the Sri Lankan Parliament in bilateral and multilateral formats. Current international and regional issues were discussed, with shared positions on several global challenges and a mutual commitment to strengthening relations.
Ambassador Gunasekera affirmed the growing popularity of the Russian language in Sri Lanka and reiterated Sri Lanka's interest in deepening people-to-people and cultural ties. She further noted that Sri Lanka and Russia will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations in two years and highlighted the need of celebrating the occasion in a fitting manner. The both parties agreed to maintain working contacts on a wide range of matters discussed at the meeting.
