Lance Corporal Sajeewa Nuwan Kumara of the Sri Lankan Army fought his way to the bronze medal in the light fly weight (49kg) class while LAC Gayani Nisansala Kaluarachchilage of SLAF created history becoming the first Sri Lankan woman pugilist to win a bronze medal in the Middle weight category (75kg) at the 58th World Military Championships.

Twenty-three members of the Sri Lankan delegation headed up by Major General RADP Ranawaka participated in the competition, which was held under the auspices of the International Military Sport Council (CISM) in Moscow, Russia from 16th to 26th September, 2021.
The 58th championship was inaugurated by Secretary of State - Deputy Minister of Defence of Russia, Nikolai Pankov, who presented the greetings from the head of the Military Department, General Sergei Shoigu, the Defence Minister of Russian Federation.
The competition took place in ten weight categories for men and five for women. 231 boxers from 36 countries competed in the tournament with a total of 216 fights.
Air Commodore Dammika Dias, Minister Counsellor, Defence, of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow attended the opening ceremony, final day of the tournament as well as the awarding ceremonies, to commend the Sri Lankan pugilists on their outstanding performance.
