On 15 October 2020, the Embassy organized and participated in a meeting between the Russian University of Transport (MIIT) and three Sri Lanka Universities interested in transport sector education, namely, the University Moratuwa, Peradeniya, and Ruhuna.

 

The meeting was organized in the framework of implementation of the decisions taken by the Sri Lanka-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, which, among other subjects, included cooperation in the sphere of education and transport between the Russian University of Transport and Sri Lankan institutions.

The meeting was graced by Prof. M D Lamawansa (H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Russia); Ms. Lubov V. Luchinina (Head of the International Cooperation Directorate of the Russian University of Transport); Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena (Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna); Prof Amal S. Kumarage (Senior Professor of the University of Moratuwa); Dr. Jayalath Edirisinghe (Senior lecturer of the University of Peradeniya) and other representatives of the Universities and the Embassy.

All four institutions made presentations on the programs they conduct, research areas that are currently engaged, potential areas for collaboration, and agreed to work together in solving transport related problems, workforce training and research. All sectors of transport namely road, maritime and air transport were considered as subjects of interest.

It was decided to develop a protocol at the earliest and to take forward the initiative.
