In celebration of National Vesak Week, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Institute of Asian and African Studies at Moscow State University organized a special joint event, fostering cultural exchange and promoting understanding of Buddhist teachings.
The Institute of Asian and African Countries of the Moscow State University (IAAS MSU) is a leading training center for specialists on Asia and Africa. Currently the IAAS MSU is the only institution in Russia teaching Sinhala language with Russian students learning the language.
The event featured an engaging lecture delivered in Russian by Venerable Bhante Rakwane Gnanaseeha Thera, a distinguished Buddhist monk and abbot of Chittaviveka Forest Monastery in Sri Lanka. Bhante Gnanaseeha Thera shared profound insights into the Buddhist doctrine and its fundamental teachings, offering attendees a deeper understanding of Buddhism's principles and its relevance in today's world.
Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera emphasized the enduring influence of Buddhist teachings on Sri Lankan culture and acknowledged Russia's pivotal role as a cultural cornerstone in Eurasia. She pointed that event of this nature would enable stronger people to people contacts grounded in shared values.
The lecture was followed by an interactive Q & A session, allowing attendees to engage directly with the speaker and deepen their knowledge of Buddhist philosophy.
The event attracted students and academicians specializing on Sri Lanka, Indian region, philosophy and religion, as well as individuals from outside of the University interested in the in-depth study and practice of the Buddha's teachings.
