The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation Shobini Gunasekera was invited as a special guest at the prestigious JUNWEX 2025 Jewellery Fair held in Moscow. The invitation underscored the strengthening ties between Sri Lanka and Russia, particularly in the gemstone and jewellery sectors.

In her address, the Ambassador emphasized the vast potential for enhanced cooperation between the two countries. She highlighted Sri Lanka's long-standing reputation as Rathna Dveepa, or "Island of Gems," and its global status as the sapphire capital. "Sri Lanka's precious stones are not just commodities but part of a rich cultural legacy that we are proud to share with the world," she noted.
During her visit, the Ambassador held a productive meeting with the Chairman of the "Guild of Jewellers of Russia", focusing on identifying and overcoming existing barriers to the bilateral trade of gemstones and jewellery.
The Ambassador also toured several exhibition stalls featuring jewellery made with Ceylon gems, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship and natural beauty that Sri Lankan gemstones are renowned for.
JUNWEX, one of the leading jewellery exhibitions in Russia, provided an ideal platform to explore synergies and promote Sri Lanka's gemstone industry on the international stage. The event marked a significant step forward in expanding trade and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Russia.
